HSE - How to become a SunSmart School
The HSE’s National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) and Healthy Ireland are encouraging schools across the country to remind children, parents and teachers of the importance of protecting skin when outside in the sun.
They have developed SunSmart lesson plans and activity sheets for SPHE (Safety and Protection). These provide teachers with ideas and materials to support the integration of sun protection education and behaviours into the classroom. The resources are available to download or order on www.healthpromotion.ie:
- SunSmart Primary School Lesson Plans - Junior infants to second class
- SunSmart Primary School Lesson Plans - Third to sixth class
They also have activities that are included in the HSE's Making Healthy Choices 2 lesson plans to support the teaching of the Junior Cycle SPHE specification. These lesson plans provide teachers with ideas and materials to support the integration of sun protection education and behaviours into the classroom.
They have also launched our SunSmart School Toolkit for Primary and Post Primary Schools Resource - this resource provides your school with information resources and supports to become a SunSmart School. By completing some simple steps schools could be accredited by the HSE’s NCCP as a SunSmart School. The resource is available in English and Irish and available to download or order from healthpromotion.ie https://www.healthpromotion.ie/products?category=44&keyword=toolkit&page=1
The HSE’s National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) and Healthy Ireland are also planning a webinar for primary and post-primary school teachers on How to become a SunSmart School:
