Beaches & Dunes Climate Adaptation Programme for Post Primary Schools

Join us for a short online webinar introducing the Dune Action: Beaches & Dunes Climate Adaptation Programme, a new curriculum-aligned resource designed to support teachers delivering Junior Cycle Geography, the new Leaving Certificate Geography specification, and the Climate Action & Sustainable Development course.

Dune Action explores coastal processes, climate change and coastal management through hands-on learning about Ireland’s dune systems and coastal environments.

Developed by ACT, the University of Galway, Clean Coasts, the Climate Action Regional Office (CARO), Leave No Trace Ireland, and University College Dublin, the programme combines geomorphology expertise with practical coastal stewardship activities for students.

During this webinar, Dr. Kevin Lynch and James McConville from the Dune Action team will provide an overview of the programme and demonstrate how the physical and online resources can support your teaching and fieldwork activities.

The programme aligns directly with key curriculum learning outcomes including:

Junior Cycle

Strand 1: Exploring the Physical World
• Learning Outcome 1.5: Explain how erosion, deposition and transportation shape fluvial, marine and glacial landscapes.

Strand 2: Exploring How We Interact with the Physical World
• Learning Outcome 2.7: Investigate how people interact with and manage surface processes.

Leaving Certificate (New Specification)

Strand 1: The Physical Environment
• 1.8: Analyse how geomorphological processes of erosion, transport and deposition impact physical environments in Ireland.
• 1.9: Discuss flood and coastal management strategies in Ireland.
• 1.14: Investigate the impacts of climate change on physical and human environments.

The training supports fieldwork requirements and provides structured, curriculum-aligned resources that teachers can immediately implement in their classrooms.
