Key Considerations for Establishing Special Classes in Mainstream Primary Schools (Full-Day, In-Person)

Key Considerations for Establishing Special Classes in Mainstream Primary Schools (Full-Day, In-Person)

This full-day in-depth, in-person course, suitable for School Principals, Deputy Principals and SEN Co-Ordinators, is designed to support schools in establishing special classes within mainstream Primary settings.

While we recognise the challenge of releasing staff without cover, the importance and demand for this training make it a valuable opportunity, particularly for schools intending to open such a class.

A condensed version of this course was recently delivered to final-year B.Ed. students at Mary Immaculate College, where it was met with high praise.

As special classes to support pupils with additional needs, including Autism, become increasingly prevalent in mainstream schools, this workshop addresses the essential considerations for a smooth transition. Following the recent DE Circular 0080/2024, the need for proper planning, resources, and strategies has grown. This course is tailored to assist school leaders and staff in making informed preparations for these new learning environments.

Key topics include:

  • Classroom Layout – Creating an accessible and supportive physical environment.
  • Curriculum Provision – Adapting the curriculum to meet diverse needs.
  • Teaching Approaches and Methodologies – Effective techniques and strategies.
  • Communication Aids and Differentiation – Supporting inclusive communication.
  • Essential Elements – Tips for delivering mandatory topics like Stay Safe and RSE.
  • Behavioural Awareness and Management – Understanding and addressing behaviour triggers.
  • Sensory Breaks – Strategies to incorporate sensory support within the school day.
  • Available Courses, Supports, and Resources – Guidance on additional training and resources, including SNA training.

Participants will also receive a comprehensive set of resources to support ongoing implementation and planning.

Schools that have recently established, or are preparing to set up, special classes will find this course invaluable. It is also relevant for those schools expecting to establish these classrooms in response to DE guidelines in conjunction with NCSE's Assessment of Need.
