Teacher/Artist Partnership Residency Programme

The Teacher/Artist Partnership (TAP) CPD Summer Course and Residency Programme is a fully-funded Department of Education and Skills approved Arts in Education initiative, with EPV day approval, under the Creative Ireland and Creative Youth Programmes. In previous years, pre-COVID-19, during the week-long Summer Course, TAP offered Primary School teachers an opportunity to explore their own creativity through the various art forms. Collaboration is key; teachers train to work in partnership with a wide variety of artists in areas such as visual arts, textiles, ceramics, photography, writing, poetry, dance, and much more. The programmes empower teachers to work through the integration of the arts in education and assist teachers and artists to work in partnership, in Primary classrooms, in enhancing the creative potential of every child.

Teachers can register to participate in TAP via their local Education Centre. Each Education Centre is guided by the Arts in Education office to advertise a Call-Out for Artists. The Call-Out for Artists is co-ordinated in conjunction with the Local Authority Arts Officers. Four Artists are recruited to participate in each of the TAP Summer Courses. A typical TAP Summer Course comprises of a maximum of 20 teacher participants and four participating Artists, along with one lead Teacher Facilitator and one lead Artist Facilitator (Teacher/Artist Pair).

Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the TAP Summer Course was approved as a face-to-face Summer Course and was also approved by the Department of Education (via Drumcondra Education Centre) as an online TAP Summer Course. In 2020, the TAP online Summer Course was successfully and creatively delivered nationally by a core TAP Design Team using a Moodle platform managed and hosted by Mayo Education Centre. One face-to-face TAP course was delivered here in Kilkenny Education Centre.

Following participation on the TAP Summer Course, teachers are eligible to apply for an Artist in Residence with a TAP trained Artist. Pre-COVID-19, each Education Centre could award up to eight face-to-face residencies to participating schools. However, in the 2020-21 school year, following last year's TAP online Summer Course and Kilkenny Education Centre's face-to-face Summer Course, 13 residencies are taking place.
