Heritage and the Curriculum

This Competition supports the SESE curriculum as follows:

  • The strand unit buildings, sites and ruins in my locality 
  • The strand unit my locality through the ages
  • The strand unit homes and houses, homes housing and urban development
  • The strand unit literature, art, crafts and culture  
  • The strand unit continuity and change in the local environment 

Competition Information for schools

This Competition is open to 4th, 5th and 6th class students:

  • The focus is an emoji that reflects the student’s ideas in relation to heritage and a short descriptor (no more than 50 words) that tells the story of the emoji
  • The closing date for receipt of entries is April 2nd 2019 

How to Enter

  • All schools are asked to run an initial school based competition across the three different class levels
  • Entries should be no larger than A4 size and the descriptor should be limited to a maximum of 50 words  
  • The school is asked to submit a PDF version of the 4th, 5th and 6th class winners by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. clearly marked Heritage 2030 Emoji Competition to Kilkenny Education Centre for inclusion in the Education Centre Final (please use the Cover Form which identifies the child’s name, school name, contact details and space for the descriptor about the emoji. Please note that this information will be shared with the adjudication panel and will be stored for the duration of the Competition)
  • Note: Only PDF versions will be accepted and entries must be submitted by email and as outlined above by April 2nd 2019
  • The original work of the school based winners should be retained in the event that the entry progresses beyond the local Education Centre and Regional Education Centres Finals to the National Final) 
  • Teachers will be notified if the entry is progressing from the local to the regional and or onto the national final
  • The adjudicators’ decisions are final 
  • The national finalists’ work will be copied onto a T-shirt and also enlarged for display purposes
  • The national finalists’ work will be used by the DCHG for promotional purposes

Calendar of Events

  • April 2nd is the closing date for receipt of entries 
  • Kilkenny Education Centre Final: Week of April 8th to the 12th    
  • Regional Finals to be held on Thursday May 2nd
  • National Final the provisional date is June 19th 2019 depending upon Ministerial availability and will be held in Dublin

Prizes

  • Kilkenny Education Centre: 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each of the year groups i.e. 4th class, 5th class, 6th class, nine prizes in total (prizes are book vouchers of €30, €20, €10 respectively)
  • Regional Final: 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each of the year groups i.e. 4th class, 5th class, 6th class, nine prizes in total (prizes are vouchers of €50, €30, €20 respectively)
  • National Final: 18 finalists, each awarded a heritage pass, a T-shirt with their emoji printed on it, a rosette as a finalist. The  winner in each class group will also receive a plaque and the overall winner will receive a prize of book tokens (€150) with additional book tokens for the school (€250)
