EAL Webinar Series #4: A Teacher's Perspective on Culturally Relevant Education for Minority Language Students in Mainstream Classrooms Webinar

In this webinar, teachers will;

  • Develop ideas for incorporating children’s first language or heritage language into their classroom practices,
  • Gain an awareness of how to use students' cultural capital as a resource in the classroom, and
  • Be equipped to encourage the use of different languages in the classroom to unlock the potential of multilingual language students and allow other students to become aware of different cultures and perspectives.  

Philip McCarthy

For the last six years, Philip has been working as a mainstream class teacher in a school in Dublin which has a diverse demographic; about 60% of the students in the school are either first or second generation migrants. In his current class group, there are 12 different languages spoken. As an educator, he is dedicated to learning and developing not only in the classroom, but also in the community. For the last five years, he has been working on a voluntary basis with the Solas project group in Dublin’s south inner city as a mentor for teenagers from disadvantaged backgrounds. Through working with students from different backgrounds and from working as an English language teacher during the summer months in 2018 and 2019 for the ATC language school, he developed a keen interest in EAL teaching and intercultural education. This led him to apply to the Master of Education Studies in Intercultural learning and leadership in Marino Institute of Education. He completed the first year of the course in June and he is now embarking on a research thesis in the area of intercultural education. This course has further illustrated to him the distinct inequalities that exist in the Irish education system for children who come from different backgrounds and speak different Languages. 

In his role as a mainstream class teacher, he seeks to bring an energy and determination in promoting the implementation of effective strategies in EAL teaching and Intercultural education. In late September 2020, he was elected to the National Executive of the English Language Support Teachers Association of Ireland (ELSTA). As a member of the National Executive, he hopes to promote the aims of the Association so that all teachers can access support when working with English language learners.
