Teacher as Writer

Teacher as Writer

This course offers participants the opportunity to develop as writers and as teachers who promote writing in the classroom. The course will comprise of three two-hour workshops; Tuesday 15th October, Tuesday 12th November and Tuesday 10th December 2019, from 5 - 7p.m.

Areas covered will include writing for a variety of audiences in a number of different forms. Each session will aim to stimulate original writing and afford opportunities to redraft and edit work in a supportive environment. The course is open to teachers of all subjects working at Primary and Post Primary levels, and also to retired teachers who wish to develop their writing skills.

Edward Denniston

Originally from Longford, Edward Denniston has lived in Waterford since 1980, the city in which his dissenting ancestor came to preach in the early 18th Century. He retired from teaching English and Drama in 2014. His publications are: The Point of Singing (Abbey Press, 1999), Interacting - 60 Drama Scripts (Russell House UK, 2007); Eskimo Advice - an ebook of poems (Rectory and Hayrake Press, 2007); The Scale of Things (Salmon Poetry, 2013) and For Crying Out Loud (Salmon Poetry, 2017). He has published in various journals and some of his poems have been translated into French, most recently in an anthology about Paris. Other work: Word To Image – seven framed pieces (2014), was a collaboration with photographer Abigail Denniston. In 2018, he worked with composer Eric Sweeney to create ‘Hospital Voices’, a choral work to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Waterford Healing Arts Trust. Also in 2018, he facilitated a series of workshops at Waterford Teachers’ Centre for teachers who write, and edited Teachers Who Write: an Anthology, which was published in November that year. Edward was also a poet in residence for Waterford Healing Arts Trust at University Hospital Waterford in 2018.
