An Introduction to Trauma and Regulation: A Practical Guide for Teachers and SNAs Webinar

This webinar is a collaboration between Kilkenny Education Centre, Cork Education Support Centre, Co. Wexford Education Centre, Waterford Teachers' Centre and West Cork Education Centre.

Trauma is present in every classroom. Increasingly, educators are faced with the challenging task of teaching children on the trauma continuum. This webinar is designed to give teachers and Special Needs Assistants (SNAs), from both Primary and Post Primary schools, information to empower them to manage trauma in the classroom setting. An introduction to trauma and regulation will be given, along with practical ways to engage in best practice when faced with this.

• Participants will gain an understanding of the neurobiology of trauma and how it changes the chemistry and physiology of the brain. Emphasis on teacher self-care will be highlighted.
• Participants will understand the different types of trauma - the ‘continuum’ nature of trauma and have an introduction to ACE’s, the fight, flight, freeze response - framed in the context of Ukrainian families, alongside other relevant examples.
• Participants will be able to draw on a range of practical ways to help children in the classroom with trauma and regulation.

Hayley Rice

Hayley Rice is a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist, specialising in play therapy. Before training as a therapist, she worked as a Primary school teacher for 10 years. Hayley has worked with children on the trauma continuum for six years in her private practice, in schools and in her local family centre.
