Emergency First Aid and Defibrillation: Incorporating Literacy and Numeracy

This Summer Course aims to train participants in how to provide Immediate Care for some common First Aid emergencies and injuries that may occur within a familiar environment. The course is tailored to meet the needs of some Common Life Threatening Emergencies and First Aid Injuries that can occur. Included in the course programme is training in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Defibrillation for the Adult/Child. A Numeracy and Literacy module is also integrated also into this course.

By participating and engaging in this course, participans will acquire some Life Saving Skills that aim  to give them the competence and ability to manage immediate care situations where First Aid may be required, so that they may provide Immediate Care to a sick or injured person while awaiting the arrival of more qualified aid.

The course involves a mix of both Theory and Practical skills, and incorporates both the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) Guidelines for Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and the Irish Heart Foundation CPR/AED 2015 Guidelines, while also covering immediate essential skills of a First Aider.                                

The course syllabus includes;

  • Introduction to, and about, First Aid and recognising an emergency and the actions to take at an emergency scene,
  • Assessing a scene for safety and knowing who and when to call for help,
  • Procedures for contacting the Emergency Services,
  • Recommended content of First Aid kit,
  • Patient sssessment for the medical/injured patient,
  • Assessing the consciousness and unconscious patients, and
  • Recognition and Management of Cardiovascular Emergencies; Heart Attack, Stroke, Cardiac Arrest, Introduction to Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/AED Module which involves practical training in CPR and AED Defibrillation for both the adult/child patient.

Other topics covered incude;

  • Respiratory Emergencies, including Asthma, and best practice guidelines, recognition and management of Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (Chocking) in the adult/child patient,
  • Dealing with unconsciousness and assessment and management of the unconsciousness patient,
  • Medical Emergencies such as seizures, Diabetes and Asthma,
  • Burns and scalds,
  • Wounds and bleeding, and
  • Fractures, best practice management.              

Participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance at Basic First Aid Level from the Registered Provider and Accredited First Aid Instructor, which is valid for two years. 

Michael Kinsella

Michael Kinsella is a Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) Registered First Aid Response (FAR) Instructor, a CPR/AED Instructor with over 20 years experience, and is a Retired Firefighter/EMT.

Due to the global pandemic of SARS NCOV2 (COVID‐19), and for the safe provision of training, the course aims to be completely compliant with national best practice guidelines on precautions to help reduce any risk of infection.
