Knitted Together: Knit and Crochet Classes for Teachers and Support Staff

 

This is a Kilkenny County Council Arts Office project supported by Creative Ireland. 

This course, open to Primary and Post Primary teachers and support staff, will take place over four consecutive Tuesdays; 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th May 2022, from 5 - 7p.m. each evening. On this course, teachers and support staff will learn the craft of knitting and/or crochet. There will be a focus on participants mastering the craft of knitting/crochet themselves and developing an adequate level of competence through practice. Each session will provide ideas and demonstrations on how to build students manual dexterity through craft-based activities and ideas to support the Fabric and Fibre strand of the Visual Art curriculum. There will also be a focus on sharing practical tips and resources on how best to introduce the craft to students, and troubleshooting with an experienced Primary school teacher who has taught knitting at Primary level.

  • Ideas for the Fabric and Fibre strand, and
  • Take part in a county-wide knitting and crochet project supported by Creative Ireland called Knitted Together.

The workshops will be co-facilitated by visual artist and textile maker, Carrie Lynam, and former Primary school teacher, Brenda Murtagh, who brings her 30 years experience to the workshops. 

Carrie Lynam

Carrie Lynam is visual artist and experienced arts educator, and her studio art practice spans a variety of disciplines including, textiles and photography. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is held in collections at the National Museum of Scotland and Kilkenny County Council. Carrie spent six years as the National Co-Ordinator of CRAFTed, the Design and Crafts Council Ireland (DCCI) Primary school programme. She has extensive experience of working with the Primary school Visual Arts curriculum for numerous national organisations, such as The Ark Children’s Cultural Centre, National Museum of Ireland, National Design and Craft Gallery, Creative Schools, and Artist Teacher Partnership to name a few. 

Brenda Murtagh

Former Primary school teacher, Brenda Murtagh, who has over 30 years experience in the classroom will contribute her wealth of expertise in the practicalities of teaching the craft of knitting/crochet to students. Brenda has contributed to published visual arts supports for teachers and students throughout her career. She has a keen interest in textile art and is an accomplished craftsperson.
