Fostering Nature Engagement Opportunities Webinar

Fostering Nature Engagement Opportunities Webinar

This webinar is a collaboration between Kilkenny Education Centre, Co. Wexford Education Centre and Waterford Teachers' Centre.

Biophilia is a phenomenon that describes how we have a primal urge to connect with nature. As toddlers, we are fascinated with the natural world. We are captivated by the variety of colours, textures, and smells. We are fascinated by worms, spiders, butterflies and bees. However, as we grow older, we become detached from nature. We become afraid of the very things that once enthralled us. If an interest isn’t fed and nurtured it will wither and die. This webinar will discuss ways in which we can foster opportunities for our young people to engage with nature from Primary right through to Post Primary school. It will provide you with a range of practical activities which can be carried out in school or at home.

Materials needed for the webinar (optional):

To make paper pots: paper, scissors, small herb jar, soya sauce bottle or curry container (or something similar).

To sow seeds: plastic soup container with lid, compost, seeds (flower or vegetable).

Patrick Kirwan

Patrick is passionate about science, tackling inequality and nature. After a career in science as an Epidemiologist, he trained as a Secondary Science teacher with TeachFirst in London, a teacher training provider whose mission is to tackle educational disadvantage. While working in disadvantaged schools in London, Patrick developed a bespoke model for a whole school nature curriculum. In school and community settings, Patrick uses nature as a conduit to foster wellbeing, leadership skills, confidence, resilience, environmental awareness and climate action. Having recently moved back to Ireland, Patrick is continuing to teach nature and develop new school environmental models.
