NEW!! Poetry Competition for Primary Schools

As part of our 20th Anniversary Celebrations, Kilkenny Education Centre, with the support and collaboration of Poetry Ireland, is organising a Poetry Competition for Primary and Post Primary schools.

Primary pupils are invited to compose poems around the chosen themes "School Life/ Learning". These themes will allow pupils full scope to engage their creativity from the  perspective of their own learning experience in school. Poems can be submitted in any genre. Please see the Poetry Ireland website or the PDF of a poetry teaching kit for Primary schools for inspiration and resources. The kit accompanies a poetry collection for children Hopscotch in the Sky by Lucinda Jacob and contains lots of ideas around teaching poetry in the Primary classroom.

Interested teachers are invited to enter their pupils in this Poetry Competition. Every pupil in the class can submit individual poems to their teacher on the theme outlined above. Teachers are asked to choose a maximum of two class entries which will be submitted to a panel of three independent adjudicators. Teachers are required to sign that pupils created their poems in class and are the pupils’ own work.

The competition at Primary level is divided into four age group categories:

a) Pupils in Junior and Senior Infants

b) Pupils in First and Second Classes

c) Pupils in Third and Fourth Classes

d) Pupils in Fifth and Sixth Classes

Winning poems will be displayed at the Awards Ceremony, which will be held on Poetry Day Ireland, April 26th in the Watershed Leisure Centre, Bohernatounish Road, Kilkenny. The band Seo Linn will be playing at the Ceremony. Winning poets, their parents and teachers will be invited to the Awards Ceremony where the poets will be presented with a medal and a Certificate. Their poems will be published on the Students’ Work section of the Poetry Ireland website and on the Kilkenny Education Centre website.

We are very grateful to Poetry Ireland, who have nominated an independent adjudicator, Jane O’ Hanlon, to assist us in judging this Competition.

Entries should be posted or dropped into Kilkenny Education Centre to reach us before 4pm on Friday, March 16th 2018. Please Note: The Entry Form should be affixed to the back of each hardcopy entry.

Thank you, as always, for your support of the work of Kilkenny Education Centre!
