The Resilient Learner

This course is designed to be of relevance to classroom teachers, team leaders and school leaders from Primary and Post Primary schools. We recommend attendance by one or two staff members who will receive follow up online support to share the learning and lead the application of practical strategies and resources to promote a Growth Mindset culture across every classroom in their school. This workshop will focus on:

  • Promoting a Growth Mindset: Developing optimism and resilience in teachers and students,
  • Improving staff and student wellbeing, raising morale and enhancing collaboration,
  • Ensuring excellent teaching and learning is attainable and sustainable, and
  • Creating a culture where independent learning and effective teaching is at the heart of school improvement.

Please Note: As this is a local course, we cannot offer Substitution or Travel. Prior approval to attend should be sought from your Principal before booking. Lunch is included.

What is Growth Mindset? 

Fixed and growth Mindset is a simple idea championed by world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck after decades of research on achievement and success – a simple idea that makes all the difference. With a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like behaviours, intelligence or talent, are fixed. They spend their time avoiding challenges that may threaten their self-beliefs, instead of welcoming them. They also believe that talent alone, not effort, creates success. They’re wrong.

With a growth mindset, people believe that their basic qualities can be developed through dedication and hard work – that effort is the path to mastery. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for lifelong success. Teaching about growth mindset creates motivation and raises achievement in the classroom and the staffroom. It also enhances wellbeing and relationships. 

Workshop Objectives 

At the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Understand growth mindset  and see how it can create a culture for outstanding learning,
  • Develop excellent growth mindset learning strategies in the classroom with many practical activities to try,
  • Use assessment as part of the learning process and ensure feedback supports good progress and develops a growth mindset attitude,
  • Use an effective coaching method to help teachers and learners develop a mindset for continuous improvement, and
  • Take away various resources to use back at school and create a personal action plan.

Content Outline

  • Exploring the needs of 21st Century learners and the current context of change and reform,
  • Mood and mindset for learning – what makes the difference,
  • Exploring the habits of outstanding learners,
  • How to change the mindsets,
  • Practical strategies to use in the classroom for raising achievement and developing independence,
  • Raising aspirations and challenge for students,
  • Engaging starters and lesson activities,
  • Perfect plenaries,
  • Giving feedback that builds a growth mindset,
  • The power of beliefs and values for teachers and schools, and
  • Using a 7 minute coaching model to help teachers and students support each other’s progress.

The way we think about learning makes all the difference in our progress towards successful outcomes. This course will explain what a growth mindset is and how everyone can develop ways of thinking that will improve outcomes for learners.

The training is very practical and inspiring with the aim of creating a growth mindset culture in every classroom in the school.
